Putin calls for promoting space industry, urges private invest
MOSCOW, April 11 (Prime-Tass) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin called Friday for promoting the country's space industry and urged private businesses to invest in space projects, ITAR-TASS reported.
"Now we have an opportunity to switch from using and maintaining the previously created Soviet space potential to implementing new, ambitious space projects," Putin said at a meeting of the Security Council.
Putin proposed "significantly expanding (Russia's) presence on the global space products and services market."
He instructed the government to draft a plan for upgrading Russian satellites and launching new ones in the period until 2020 and urged it to start the construction of the Vostochny space launch facility as soon as possible. The facility is expected to be located in the Amur Region.
Putin also said he believed Russian business was "mature enough" to start investing in the space industry.
