Italy pushes for reform of Schengen deals

Italy’s new centre-right government, committed to cracking down on illegal immigration, is supporting an “updating” of the European Union’s Schengen agreements and backing new EU laws on residency.
Presenting his government’s programme to parliament on Tuesday, Silvio Berlusconi began his third stint as prime minister with a focus on the economy. He also made a strong statement on security and immigration – twin themes that dominated the electoral campaigns of his rightwing coalition allies.
