Berlin may go it alone on bank regulations

The German government is considering a unilateral tightening of bank regulations, should other industrial nations fail to agree on a concerted reaction to the subprime crisis, Berlin officials said on Tuesday.
Peer Steinbrück, finance minister, will outline proposals to parliament on Friday next week after presenting them to his counterparts at a Group of Seven finance ministers’ meeting in Tokyo this weekend.
